It's Your Life - Make It a 10Jun 16, 2021
Are you living your best life? The best version of yourself right now? Or do you feel like something is missing? Maybe a little of that, “I’ll think about it tomorrow. After all, tomorrow is another day” attitude has crept into your mindset.
We get it, life can become comfortable. The job has become less challenging, and even though it feels like we’re accomplishing something, we’ve kind of gone on autopilot. Our days blend together and are starting to feel and look pretty much the same. We may not feel stagnant, but we’re not moving forward. And yet, there’s that voice, that nagging voice in the back of your mind telling you that you were meant for more.
So maybe you’re living at a comfortable 6. Which is fine if that’s where you want to be. But what are you missing out on by not living a life of 10? Sometimes those voices in your head are telling you something you need to hear. Look around, assess where you are, and determine where you want to be.
Living that best life doesn’t happen by chance. It’s the result of having goals and skillfully allocating your resources in order to reach them. These resources include your thoughts, time, and energy. Ultimately, having this best life comes from taking the 24 hours you’re given each day and using them in a wise and intentional manner. Just dealing with the next item on your endless list of to-dos or reacting to what’s happening around you creates busywork, but it doesn’t create your best self.
You need to be intentionally proactive. You need to find a system or daily routine that works for you. You also need to build in those days when your brain can run on neutral knowing that the next day, you’re back to living and working your best life.
First, realize the power that the present moment holds. Ask yourself:
Where am I right now?
- Define your career. Not just your job title but look at your personal journey that got you to where you are right now. What responsibilities and skills do you have right now you didn’t have a year ago?
- Define your personal life.
How are you living your daily life? What life/work balance have you created (or not created)?
- Define other areas in your life. Health, hobbies, activities, sports, community involvement…
Then, envision your future self. While you should spend a great deal of time enjoying the present moment, you can add to your happiness by envisioning your future self. Reflect on the feelings associated with the successful completion of your goals. Think of the traits you’ll exhibit when you are living your true best self.
Now bring those traits into the present.
What action steps can you take today to get started? Don’t wait for a perfect time. The perfect time is NOW. It may be tempting to keep putting things off until you reach some milestone, but instead, take the first step to being the best you.
Cory Chadwick, founder of The Mental Gym and Sweet but Fearless podcast guest (episode #37), talks about the importance of mindset when it comes to building your best self. He states there is “this version of yourself that you are” and then “there’s this version of yourself deep-down you believe you could be.”
Over the next week spend an hour and define:
What is the version of myself that I am right now?
What is that version of myself I want to be?
What do I need to do to get from right now to what I want?
Do I need to simplify my life and eliminate the things that are not bringing me enjoyment or contributing to me being my best self?
How am I prioritizing my day? Am I prioritizing the right things to be my best self?
Are there things in my life that are emotionally draining? Can I eliminate or minimize them?
Control your thinking. Taking charge of your thoughts can change your mindset in a positive way and fast-track you living your best self.
